Recent Projects
We have ongoing projects for large and small development and infrastructure projects. The links above provide case studies for a few recently completed contaminated land projects, ranging from straightforward PRA reports to more complex detailed quantitative risk assessment (DQRA) reports where land contamination was identified.
Appropriate Risk Assessment for Brownfield Sites and Contaminated Land
In the UK, the adopted risk assessment approach to contaminated land, or potentially contaminated land, is the DEFRA / Environment Agency’s Model Procedures for the Management of Land Contamination known as CLR11. The guidance follows a conceptual model process whereby sources, pathways and receptors are risk assessed on a site-specific basis with consideration for human health and environmental receptors. It ensures that investigations are in compliance with the Environmental Protection Act (1990), as well as meeting the requirements of Local Authorities throughout the UK.
The risk assessment of contaminated land may range from a straightforward desktop study and qualitative risk assessment to more complex quantitative risk assessments, which include undertaking intrusive site investigations in Northern Ireland, UK or the Republic of Ireland and the subsequent monitoring of water, soil and ground gases.
What to do about contaminated land?
If land contamination is identified onsite and a quantitative risk assessment deems there to be unacceptable risk to human health and / or the environment, we will provide Options Appraisal to determine the best way forward to ultimately achieve planning permission and / or allow development to proceed as planned.
Our specialist contaminated land consultants can carry out detailed quantitative risk assessments prior to progressing straight to land remediation. This process can limit and refine the level of remediation required at a particular site, as well as inform of remediation options should remediation be required following the findings of a DQRA.
When remediation is necessary to eliminate risk, we can provide a Remediation Strategy Report for agreement with the Local Authority and Regulator.
We work collaboratively with clients and affiliate consultants to provide full waste management service and minimise waste generation at contaminated land sites. We can provide waste classification services and work to find the most cost effective and environmentally sustainable method of the transportation and disposal of waste.
